SAINT CATHERINE’S DAY TAFFY WORKSHOP (combo guided tour at 10 a.m. + workshop at 11 a.m.)
The members of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame (CND) have been making this candy since the time of Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620-1700)! Maison Saint-Gabriel is one of the rare places where the tradition of Saint Catherine’s Day taffy continues.
For the first time, the museum is offering a hands-on workshop on how to prepare and pull the taffy. Sister Madeleine Montour and her assistants will explain the different steps in making the taffy, demonstrate techniques and share the tricks and secrets to a successful recipe!
Then it will be your turn to pull your own Saint Catherine’s Day taffy. Young and old can pitch in and, above all, sample! Finally, you can cut and wrap your taffy in parchment paper to bring it home with you... if there is any left!
This is a fun way to discover or to rediscover one of the oldest culinary traditions in Quebec.
