Discovery tour of Maison Saint-Gabriel's architecture (F)
The Maison Saint-Gabriel is one of the oldest examples of traditional rural architecture in New France. Purchased in 1668 by Marguerite Bourgeoys, the rubble-stone dwelling – the present house was rebuilt on the original foundations following a fire in 1693 – features a rectangular, two-storey main building topped by a gabled roof. Although the interior layout of the house has been altered over time – notably with the addition of an annexe in the 19th century – it essentially retains the configuration familiar to the Filles du Roy, who were housed there from 1668 onwards.
This guided tour introduces visitors to the many architectural features of this historic site, which has stood the test of time, and allows them to explore several of its hidden corners, including the attic, where an impressive solid timber roof structure is revealed.
