Stanley Wany. Espaces imprévisibles

from Nov 3, 2023 to Jan 20, 2024
Galerie de l'UQAM

In the exhibition Espaces imprévisibles, artist Stanley Wany explores his multiethnic family past and Afro-descendent identity through installations. The works reappropriate the history of Black communities in America by focusing on the legacies of colonialism responsible for erasing roots, cultures, and identities. Combining drawing, sculpture, and mediums that come from colonialist exploitation—coffee, sugarcane, indigo, and cotton—the artist examines the aesthetic potential of these materials while also showing their connection to his own history. Supported by movements of thought on Black identity, the exhibition is grounded in the cultural ecosystem of the Antilles and becomes a site of “creolization,” an unpredictable space created out of the encounter between different perspectives.
