Saints, Sinners, Lovers and Fools: Three Hundred Years of Flemish Masterworks

Organized by the Denver Art Museum and The Phoebus Foundation of Antwerp, Belgium, this major exhibition presents masterworks by celebrated artists of the day – Hans Memling, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens and Michaelina Wautier, among many others – and highlights how their timeless, captivating themes continue to connect with audiences today.

The exhibition begins with religious art of the 15th and early 16th centuries. Artworks packed with symbolism and delightful details give visitors an appreciation of how Flemish citizens used images to interact with higher powers, build community and secure their legacy. Following this section is a group of paintings depicting fools and foolish behaviour that showcase how artists used humour to both moralize and entertain.

The Museum’s rich collections are divided into six major sections distributed among the five pavilions of the Museum complex, each of which focusses on a particularly strong aspect of the holdings. Today, 158 years after its founding, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is more forward-looking than ever! This institution is not a government-run museum, but relies on generous patrons for the expansion of its encyclopedic heritage collection, which has risen to a historic total of 43,000 works.

東海道 Tōkaidō: Dreamscapes by Andō Hiroshige
Conflating the real and the imaginary, the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō” transports us on the legendary route that connected Edo (Tokyo) to the former imperial capital of Japan, Kyōto. These prints demonstrate how Hiroshige and his publishing team masterfully recast a landscape into a dream.
