The Stewart Hall Art Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Entre les lignes – Writing Mountains, curated by Manel Benchabane, featuring the work of artists Nour Bishouty, Kuh Del Rosario, Joyce Joumaa, The Society of Affective Archives, Anahita Norouzi, Hajra Waheed, and Leila Zelli. The artists presented in this exhibition explore the potential narrative of landscape and nature as protagonists of personal, political and fictional stories.
Véronique La Perrière M and Fiona Annis, from the collective The Society of Affective Archives, present a series of photos from a trip that provided the basis for a new narrative and material for their personal archives. Artists Kuh Del Rosario and Nour Bishouty have produced sculptures that are the result of reflections inspired as much by their family narratives as by stories of the past, Joyce Joumaa and Hajra Waheed present video works that introduce us to scenes that are both ordinary and spectacular, while Anahita Norouzi and Leila Zelli explore ideas of displacement through symbolic objects as carriers of stories and reflections.
By bringing together three-dimensional archives, photo and video documents, and memories materialized in ink and graphite drawings, this exhibition presents the work of women who question the very notion of landscape through their own personal vision and the art forms they employ. These works, each anchored in their own distinct environments, provide an active reading of the stories they tell, which relate as much to the cultural dimension of the landscape as to its sensorial and material nature.
