Ce lien qui m’habite - Marie-Andrée Côté
Marie-Andrée Côté’s work is grounded in the acts of observation and gathering. Observation emerges through a careful reading of nature—its recurring patterns, subtle correspondences, and hidden wonders—supported by a deep understanding of natural processes. Gathering unfolds in several stages. Beginning with photographs taken on site, the artist breaks down their components to retain what is essential: the forms of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Through the patient practice of ceramics and photography, she then creates petals and leaves that accumulate into a reimagined cohesive whole.
Rather than imitating nature, Marie-Andrée Côté reimagines it, inviting us to see it more clearly. In a time when environmental degradation and multiple threats often go unnoticed, her work offers a renewed way of looking. The artist does not adopt a moralizing stance, nor does she dwell on images of destruction. Instead, by celebrating and elevating fragments that might initially seem insignificant, she invites a sense of wonder toward these fragile elements and, perhaps, an awareness that encourages care and protection.
Marie-Andrée Côté’s practice is both engaging and compelling. Her technical expertise as a ceramist and photographer results in works with rich, sensuous textures and a refined finish. Intriguing without being obscure, the details of her works encourage close looking and contemplation. Rooted in contemporary reflection, her practice also embraces the handmade qualities of craft traditions, bridging conceptual inquiry and material skill.
