Corridart on the Big Screen: A Story of Art Censorship

What exactly happened on the night of July 13, 1976? Corridart, an outdoor exhibition displayed all along the Sherbrooke Street in Montréal for the Olympic Games, was dismantled in the middle of the night. The incident is one of Quebec’s biggest acts of artistic censorship.

Join us on the Thursday and Friday evening just before the events, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., to see the new temporary exhibition Corridart : l'exposition disparue en une nuit, presented on the MEM Cordes à linge. Plunge into the world of the 1970's artists impacted by the Corridart censorship measures.

Join us on Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m. for a screening of Bob McKenna’s documentary, À propos de l’affaire Corridart (2002). The film recalls the events and the long court battle that followed, after the artists took the City of Montréal to court.

Friday, May 22, at 7 p.m., you’re invited to the pre-release screening of Bob McKenna’s latest documentary, La créativité, c’est la liberté. The film looks at the links between creativity and freedom of expression, while giving the audience a sneak-peek at an upcoming graphic novel on the 50th anniversary of the Corridart affair. Visual artists, musicians, writers, and cultural workers all testify to the impacts of censure.

Both projections will be followed by a discussion with the film maker and artists featured in the films.
